Klotho
Human alpha-Klotho (α-Klotho) is predominantly expressed in the kidney, brain and exerts anti-aging effects. The studies have found that the low circulating α-klotho levels were associated with adverse kidney disease outcome. Mice homozygous for a hypomorphic klotho allele (kl/kl) die prematurely at around 2–3 months of age.
Human beta-Klotho (β-Klotho) is more restricted to the liver and the fat tissues.
